Their voices rose from the valley like smoke from fading embers—faint cries of desperation: “All hope is gone; our nation is finished.”
This haunting image echoes the prophetic vision in Ezekiel 37:1–14, commonly known as The Valley of Dry Bones.
In the vision, lifeless bones scatter across a barren valley—dry, disconnected, and void of life—symbolizing the despair of the Israelites during the Babylonian exile of the 6th century BC, when Jerusalem and the Temple were destroyed, and many were taken captive.
God asks the prophet, “Can these bones live?”
In other words - Can hope be restored when all seems lost?
The prophet wisely answers, “Only You know.”
He is then commanded to speak life into the bones - “Dry bones, listen to the word of the Lord… I will put breath into you and make you live again.”
Flesh forms, breath enters, and what was once lifeless rises again—a powerful symbol of restoration.
We all face moments when hope feels buried - times of abandonment, despair, or deep discouragement. We may whisper, “What’s the use?”
Scripture offers a powerful antidote.
Romans 5:3–5 reminds us that even in trouble, endurance shapes our character, and character leads us back to hope—a hope that doesn’t disappoint, because God’s love fills us through the Holy Spirit.
My prayer is that you come to see that hope deferred is only one side of the story. Desires fulfilled are a tree of life.
Can these bones live? Yes.
God can breathe life into anything that feels dead. Restoration is not only possible—it’s promised for when there is hope there is a belief in a future and the dawn of a new day.
