There's a Superhero Inside of You

A package arrived for me last week. Seeing the parcel near our front door, I honestly had to ask myself “Did I order something online?” I did not recall doing so.

I retrieved the package, a gift (or should I say re-gift) from my younger brother, Brian.

Although the enclosed note did not actually state this, the message I derived from the contents spoke the following to me – “There is a Superhero Inside of You!”

The invitation to Superhero status was further reinforced later in the week with the neighborhood and community being inundated by many children dressed in costumes for Candy Fest 2014, otherwise known as Halloween.

A princess, inspired by Frozen, knocked on our door. Her little sister clung to her Mom and was not into it at all! Smiles broke out with the princess nabbing a few candy bars. We doubled her up so little sister would not be slighted.

A young boy in a red-caped costume rang the doorbell and stuck out his hand waiting for me to deposit into his bag a chocolate delight or two.

He was invincible!

On a last minute run to replenish the candy inventory, traffic in town was slowed to a crawl to make sure the dozens of kids lurking the streets were safe.

As these kids paraded through town with their parents or older siblings, they were who they were dressed to be.

Nothing or no one could tell them otherwise. I even got a FaceTime visit from my granddaughter, Naomi.

On the day she called, she was transformed into Minnie Mouse (with a mouthful of candy)!

Let’s rewind back to my surprise gift.

What the heck possessed my brother to send me such an “interesting” gift?

He alone has the answer. However, my answer to the question slowly began to leak out.

When I was a kid, I believed what I heard and regularly subscribed to the notion that nothing, as in NO THING, was impossible.

In many ways, I thought I “could leap tall buildings with a single bound”.

I was “faster than a speeding bullet”.

Since my name is Bruce, as in Bruce Wayne, the caped crusader and I were BFF’s!

In my heart of hearts, there literally was nothing I thought was impossible or insurmountable.

Throw on the cape, actually or metaphorically, and the evil oppressors were about to meet their match.

What happens to us when the simplicity of childhood is replaced with the responsibility of being an adult?

Our childlike faith is first diluted and then replaced by worry, fear, and seeing things through murky waters. We tend to magnify the supposed realities before us instead of entertaining the possibilities which could exist if we simply allowed them to get beyond our security gate.

We are told “anything is possible if a person believes”. We are encouraged to “become like little children”.

What’s one to do?

I am not saying we need to shirk our adult responsibilities. I am saying we all need a dose of stepping back in time to see the Superhero inside and allowing what is POSSIBLE to eradicate the smoke screen of what appears to be IMPOSSIBLE!

“For with God nothing shall be impossible!” (Luke 1:37 KJV)

It’s time to throw on the cape, assume the identity of your favorite Superhero (or Princess), and once again leap some tall buildings for the heck of it!

You never know what surprises await you.

Growing up, did you have a favorite Superhero or like?
